Ubud is one of the most touristic
cities of Bali, as well as its cultural centre. Rather than a city, Ubud looks
like a giant village with two main streets running north to south and east to
west, with the main market in its junction. Around it you can find the main
temples and palaces, along with hotels and restaurants. This area is bustling
with tourists, mostly French, traffic jams and pollution.
However, once you get out of those
two streets, Ubud changes completely. In the backstreets there are homestays,
local restaurants (warungs) and workshops. Buildings are less than three
stories, and there are plenty of gardens and plants.
Moreover, Ubud provides a really
pleasant atmosphere where tourists and locals can meet, and it is an excellent
base to visit the surroundings.
The city’s main attraction is the
Monkey Forest. The entry fee is less than two euros, and it is possible to do
some nice walks inside. The forest hosts three important temples, and despite
the entrance being forbidden, you can see most of them from outside. Anyway,
people come to see the monkeys and the stunning nature.
We spent three hours hanging around
and watching the monkey’s pranks. One bold tourist came too close to a monkey
and got bitten, while another got his trousers pulled down by a hungry monkey
eyeing his bananas. Nonetheless, not all of them are that polite, and one
monkey jumped on the back of a Chinese tourist trying to take his spot. An ape
tried to clean the lice out of a Dutch friend, while clinging to her head and
pulling her hair (she promised to send us the video).
It is a fairy tale forest, with huge
trees whose roots fall down from the branches looking for the earth, bridges
over a deep river, monkeys everywhere, and a wonderful light at sunset.
