Guilin, base de operaciones / Guilin, basecamp

Después de Cantón, nuestra siguiente parada ha sido Guilin. El lugar perfecto para pasar unos días y explorar los alrededores. Buen alojamiento a buenos precios, buenos restaurantes y una situación inmejorable nos llevó a pasar cinco noches en la ciudad.

Sinceramente, lo que más nos gustó fue un restaurante al que llegamos por azar. Parecía elegante por fuera, en la segunda planta de un buen hotel, y decidimos darle una oportunidad. El gran problema era pedir la comida, el menú estaba únicamente en chino y no venía  acompañado de las habituales fotos. Con la ayuda de una amable clienta, el diccionario universal ilustrado, el glosario de la guía y mucha, mucha paciencia e imaginación conseguimos pedir algo de comer.

Andrea pidió una sopa de pollo y nos trajeron un perolo con cinco litros de caldo y un pollo entero (cabeza incluida). También nos sirvieron un pato pekinés, una fuente entera de pepino hervido y unos dumplings (una masa de pan blanco horneada y rellena de carne, verduras, o lo que quieras). Estaba todo muy rico y volvimos varias veces a comer lo mismo.

Lo único que visitamos pagando fue el antiguo palacio en el que se encuentra el “pico de la belleza solitaria”. La entrada cuesta casi diez euros y es uno de los mayores timos de los que hemos sido víctimas en lo que llevamos en el sudeste asiático. Los edificios, que solo se ven por fuera, son de antes de ayer. Las cuevas visitables son angustiosas y están llenas de chinxs en grupos. El pico famoso no se diferencia en nada de todos los demás en Guilin. No vayáis, que no os timen.

After Canton, our next stop has been Guilin. The perfect place to spend a few days and explore the surroundings.  Good accommodation at good prices, good restaurants and an unbeatable location made us stay five nights in the city.

Sincerely, the thing we enjoyed the most was a restaurant which we found randomly. It looked elegant from the outside, on the second floor of a nice hotel, and we decided to give it a chance. The big problem we faced was to order the food; the menu was only in Chinese and lacked the usual pictures. With the help of client, the illustrated universal dictionary, the guide’s food glossary, and lots, really lots of patience and imagination we managed to order something to eat.

Andrea asked for a chicken soup and they brought us a huge bowl with five litres of soup and a whole chicken (the head included). They also served us a Pekin duck, a platter full of steamed cucumber and some dumplings. Everything was delicious and we came back a couple of times to eat the same things.

The only thing we paid to visit was the old palace in which you can find the “Peak of Solitary Beauty”. The entrance fee is nearly ten euros and is one of the biggest scams of which we have been victims in our trip around South East Asia. The buildings that you can only see from the outside look very recent.  The caves that you can visit are distressing and they are full of groups of Chinese. The famous peak is exactly the same as all the other you can find in Guilin. Don’t go there and don’t be scammed.
