Varanasi

Varanasi es una de las ciudades sagradas a orillas del Ganges, y es famosa por los rituales funerarios que tienen lugar en sus ghats (escaleras que llevan al río).

Mucha gente se desplaza a esta ciudad a morir para que sus cuerpos sean cremados junto al río sagrado, y paseando por los ghats es posible verlo en vivo y en directo.

Pasear junto al río es de hecho lo único interesante de Varanasi, un lugar superpoblado y contaminado. Aunque la suciedad llega hasta la orilla, y las aguas están llenas de basura y cadáveres de personas y animales, se ven cosas muy curiosas.

A parte de las cremaciones, están l@s lavander@s, l@s peregrin@s bañándose, el ganado, las vacas y los perros callejeros, los barberos, los niños jugando al críquet, la gente mayor sentada viendo la vida pasar...

Una forma mucha más tranquila y menos apestosa de disfrutar de este paisaje urbano es dando un paseo en barca. Por menos de dos euros te llevan una hora río arriba y abajo. Junto con los restaurantes en los tejados de los edificios, esto fue lo que más nos gustó.

Varanasi is one of the holy cities on the shores on the Ganges, and it is famous for its funerary rituals that take place in its ghats (stairs leading to the river).

A lot of people come to this city to die so their bodies can be cremated next to the holy river, and walking along the ghats it is possible to watch it live.

Strolling along the river is actually the only interesting thing of Varanasi, an overpopulated and polluted place. Even if the garbage reaches the shore, and the water if sull of rubbish and animal and human corpses, you can see very curious things.

Apart from the cremations, you can see the washers, the pilgrims bathing cattle, street cows and dogs, the barbers, the children playing cricket, old people watching life pass by...

A much more relaxed and less stinky way of enjoying this urban landscape is going for a boat trip. For less than two euros they will take you an hour up and down the river. Along with the rooftop restaurants, this is the thing we enjoyed the most.
