Una semana en la Malasia urbana ha dado para mucho. A lo largo de estos días nos hemos ido topando con carteles de lo más variopinto. Además, hemos aprendido alguna cosa.
Awas! Que en bahasa significa "¡Atención!", es una palabra muy importante. El bahasa (idioma malayo) se escribe en alfabeto latino, aunque a menudo transcriben las palabras al alifato (alfabeto árabe). Nosotr@s podíamos leer ambas escrituras, aunque no entendíamos ninguna. También muchas cosas estaban escritas en chino (o eso creemos).
Por otro lado, al haber tanta mezcla de poblaciones, al final el idioma que utilizan es el inglés. Por ejemplo, en el autobús una mujer malaya y una china, ambas residentes en Melaka, charlaban en inglés. Eso facilita mucho las cosas para lxs viajerxs independientes: todo el mundo habla inglés.
En el tren, camino de las Batu cuevas, nos sorprendieron dos cosas. La primera, la prohibición de besarse dentro. La segunda, la existencia de vagones exclusivos para mujeres. A pesar de que sabíamos de su existencia en otros países, desconocíamos que también los hubiera en Malasia.
En el autobús nos llamó mucho la atención un cartel que prohibía escupir en inglés, en bahasa y en chino.
Vivir para ver, mejor con una sonrisa.
After one week in Malaysia we've seen many things. During these days we've come across posters and signs of all kinds. Moreover we've learned some things.
Awas! which means attention in bahasa is a very important word. Bahasa (the malay language) is written using the Latin script, but is normally transcribed to the Arab script too. We could read both of them, but we understood neither. Many things are also written in Chinese, or so we think.
On the other hand, with such a big mix of populations, English ends up being the language used between the different communities. For example, we saw in a bus a Malay and a Chinese woman, both residents of Melaka, chatting in English. This is really helpful for independent travellers: everyone speaks English!
On the train, on our way to the Batu Caves, two things drew our attention. First of all, the prohibition of kissing in the train. Secondly, the existance of a coach for ladies only. Even if we knew about these coaches in other countries, we didn't know that they existed in Malaysia.
Whatever... better with a smile.
