Fatehpur Sikri

40 kilometres away from Agra, in between the villages of Fatehpur and Sikri, you can find the Mughal Empire’s former capital between the years 1571 and 1585.

Amidst the remains of the old city Fatehpur Sikri’s palatial complex and the Jama Masjid’s mosque stand out. They served the Emperor Akbar for such a short period because after his death the city was abandoned (due to water shortages problems).

Loyal to their taste, the construction materials are the red sandstone and white marble. It has been said that the city was a Indo-Islamic masterpiece.

We didn’t think that the palaces were anything special, but you have to take into account that we have just visited those of Orchha and Agra. However, we really enjoyed the mosque.

All in all, it’s a very recommendable half a day (or full day depending on your passion for red sandstone) daytrip from Agra.
